Usually, phones are just connected to a centralised hub, no different from things like water pipes really.
[This is an oversimplification that he's aware has a 50% chance of making Naruto think that water pipes are also possessed. It's a risk he'll take.]

REGARDLESS… Naruto still considers Ethan a friend. They've had a pleasant conversation— that constitutes as a friend and no, he doesn't make the rules, deal with it. So! He'd be happy to hang out with him even without the excuse of their genki imaginary friend. ]

I have no idea what the phone ghost would actually be doing, I try not to think too much about the supernatural or magical.

I wish. It'd be easier back home, but only because I understand those complexities better. The post was also specific to the phones, not the computers or the landlines that also connect to things.
Ah... either probably works. I don't know how long these take to watch, but I have most of the day before I need to be back home, so there's that. If it'll be late, my place might be better.
